Dr Lucy Telfar Barnard

Dr Lucy Telfar-Barnard is an environmental epidemiologist and Senior Research Fellow with the University of Otago Department of Public Health, where she works across the He Kāinga Oranga/Housing and Health Research Programme (which won the 2014 Prime Minister’s Science Prize and the 2021 Rutherford Medal), and the Health Environment and Infection Research Unit. Her current research covers national and international housing standards and regulation of rental housing quality, seasonal and cold-temperature related morbidity and mortality, and respiratory disease epidemiology. Previous research has looked at health outcomes associated with insulation interventions, and with home ventilation interventions; demographic risk factors for eviction; and COVID-19 epidemiology and public health strategy. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the New Zealand Asthma and Respiratory Foundation, and coordinates He Kāinga Oranga’s work as a WHO Collaborating Centre on Housing and Well-being.
