Federal Minister for housing completes opening plenary line-up

Sukkar

Following the re-election of the Coalition Government in May, Hon Michael Sukkar MP was appointed as Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Housing in the new Morrison Government.

Minister Sukkar is well known to the affordable housing sector and we are pleased to announce that he will join us in Darwin to deliver the Ministerial Keynote Address as part of our opening plenary session.

Minister Sukkar was a keynote speaker at the 2017 Conference in Sydney. In this address (above) on “the latest from the Federal Government” at the time, he reflected on the  establishment of NHFIC, a corporate entity dedicated to improving housing affordability. This launched on July 1 2018 and operates the affordable housing bond aggregator as well as administering 1 billion dollar infrastructure facility.

The NHFIC is based on AHURI research into bond aggregator models presented in a report from the Affordable Housing Working Group (AHWG) to Federal, State and Territory Treasurers as part of the Council on Federal Financial Relations in late 2016.

In March this year the NHFIC announced the successful launch of its first bond issue of $315 million; the largest social bond aligned to international principles issued in Australia to date.

Minister Sukkar’s address in Darwin will be eagerly anticipated and provides a platform for the Minister to outline the Federal Government’s housing policy priorities.
