For the first time in its history, the 2019 National Housing Conference will be held in Darwin. AHURI will be working alongside the Northern Territory Government and NT Tourism to welcome delegates to the city. Darwin is a tropical city uniquely positioned between a glittering harbour and the varied regional landscapes of the territory. Darwin is a melting pot of people and cultures. The city balances Indigenous ties to country, maritime history and the ambition to be a gateway to Asia. The NT’s capital is the perfect platform for meaningful discussion around Indigenous perspectives and priorities and Australia’s affordable and climate resilient housing.
NT Architect Lawrence Nield recently asked questions on Darwin’s future amidst rising temperatures; “what might emerge? Perhaps a cool-in-both-senses city: a cosmopolitan tropical capital with tree canopy, vine shade structures and fountains. Perhaps a cool international waterfront city – an eight-hour voyage by fast ferry from Indonesia. Perhaps the full urban recognition of the Larrakia, the saltwater people, and their places: beaches, fish traps, middens, yarning circles, meeting places and cultural centres.”
We strongly encourage delegates to explore Darwin and the NT on either side of the National Housing Conference. Tourism in the Top End has put together this welcoming package of attractions, tours and other helpful resources for specifically for NHC delegates to help you plan your trip.
