As Parramatta positions itself as Sydney’s second CBD and its employment base grows, the surrounding neighbourhoods will have an increased demand for housing, retail and public spaces. This site tour will provide attendees with an engaging session on the masterplanning involved in creating a ‘second city’ and will examine housing, renewal and facilities.
Telopea is an ideal location for renewal, more housing and better facilities. The area is a major project of the Communities Plus program, with 3,500 – 4,500 additional homes forecasted in the area for the next 15-20 years. There will be a focus on more social and affordable homes, with improved infrastructure providing better access and safety. Community spaces will also be revitalised, with upgrades to Sturt and Acacia Parks, a modernised library and surrounding facilities, and new plazas, cafes and shops. The new light rail will also be part of this redevelopment, with the Parramatta Light Rail offering dramatic improvements to public transport. The Telopea masterplan, endorsed by the City of Parramatta Council in March 2017 and pending exhibition, will make the area a desirable place to live, socialise and take part in daily urban life.
Located right at the heart of Western Sydney, Parramatta has the opportunity to serve as a major economic hub to one of Australia’s fastest growing areas. By 2050, the region could house 70% of Sydney’s population growth.
The ongoing regeneration of Parramatta is delivering better health services, economic development, stronger communities and a population boom. Parramatta Square is a key landmark in the area. The three-hectare development will provide a new civic heart, with public space, corporate facilities, residential apartments, retail and dining, new Council headquarters and connections to the transport interchange. By completion in 2020, around 13,000 people will work at Parramatta Square.
A strategically important precinct, Parramatta North comprises approximately 26 hectares of NSW Government land. The lands at Parramatta North were rezoned via a State Significant Sites process on 20 November 2015 by the Minister for Planning. The rezoning of the precinct allows for the delivery of approximately 2,800 new apartment units, 20,000 square metres of new commercial floor space; around 4,000 square metres of retail space, the preservation and adaptation of heritage buildings and approximately 7.1 hectares of new public open space, including a new river foreshore park.
