A registered architect, Dr Damian Madigan is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of South Australia. A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, in 2017 he was appointed to the South Australian State Government’s Design Review Panel. Damian’s research-by-design centres around the flexibility of existing houses and suburban futures. His particular research emphasis is on the introduction of new forms of low scale medium density housing in established suburbs, through the adaptation and extension of older character housing, coupled with the retention of mature landscape. His work encompasses design speculation across the fields of infill housing, density, adaptive reuse, heritage, cultural memory, ageing in place and household diversity. Described as “innovative, practical and ethical”, his ‘Established Manors’ medium density design speculation won the Manor House category in the international Missing Middle Design Competition for the NSW Office of the Government Architect.
